Forest Garden Design

A forest garden in the Sierra foothillsSierra Permaculture Guild: Forest Garden Design
Saturday, April 9, 2011
2:30pm

Permaculture designer and teacher Mike Kluk will explore the place of a forest garden within an overall permaculture design. Mike will cover the challenges presented in a foothills-influenced Mediterranean climate, overview forest garden design basics,  explain site preparation, planting and maintenance procedures, and list the varieties of trees, vines, shrubs and annuals that will survive in our local climate.  This presentation will be more of a discussion than a lecture since Mike’s own forest garden is only three years old and he still has more questions than answers about what works.

Local Responses to Peak Oil

Sierra Permaculture Guild: Local Responses to Peak Oil

Saturday, March 12, 2011
2:30pm

As the economic ramifications of Peak Oil begin to manifest at the local level, communities here in the foothills are beginning to make assessments of how to cope.

The Nevada City Energy Solutions Task Force (NCESTF) recently finished its report to the city, spelling out a few of Nevada City’s expected vulnerabilities to Peak Oil, and some of the steps that Nevada City could take to prepare. Tom Grundy, lead author of the Task Force report, will summarize some of the findings and recommendations that are specific to Nevada City and to our region. Joining the discussion, Nevada City councilwoman Reinette Senum will explain the Alpha Building project and her vision for creating a vibrant and diverse local economy.

Also: Guild Seed Exchange – Please bring your surplus open-pollinated and heirloom vegetable, herb, and flower seeds to exchange with meeting attendees.

Admission is free. Please bring a cushion to sit on.

A Call for Speakers & Presentations

Seeking Sustainability Experts for the 2011 Sierra Permaculture Guild Season

Greetings Permies and Happy New Year! I hope this coming year brings you much abundance.

I am very much looking forward to getting the 2011 Sierra Permaculture Guild meeting schedule planned and I’m now seeking local experts to do talks at our upcoming guild meetings.

Permaculture is a broad system of sustainable design and as such, I am looking for speakers who can do 60-minute presentations on subjects covering both the visible and invisible structures related to permaculture, including but not limited to:

– ecological agriculture
– animals & range management
– soil management & fertility
– bees & beekeeping
– peak oil & energy issues
– local/independent media
– relocalization & transition movements
– alternative currencies & economics
– social justice
– distributed & renewable energy systems
– ecovillage & intentional communities
– water harvesting
– ecology & wildlife
– earthworks
– wildcrafting
– canning & preserving
– seed saving
– plant propagation
– natural building methods & techniques
– handcrafts and practical skills
– Zone 0 & the Inner Landscape
– a presentation on your personal permaculture designs/projects
– and any and all other topics that are applicable to Permaculture

If you are not familiar with permaculture, you can find a nice summary here: http://sierrapermaculture.com/?page_id=71

More social interaction is also a goal of mine for the Guild this year, and so I’d like to suggest — with input from you — that we rotate meeting locations amongst guild members’ homes and perhaps include a potluck at each meeting. By hosting a meeting at your place, you can show us what you’ve been doing and gather design & implementation input from guild members. This could, in turn, spin off into ‘Garden Wheel’ workdays where members gather to help other members install systems in a hands-on way. What are you thoughts? Please feel free to post your feedback on any and all of this in the comments section, on the guild listserv, or the discussion section on our Facebook page and let’s get a conversation going! Perhaps now would be a good time to add a discussion forum to the mix?

If you’d like to do a presentation or host a Guild meeting this season, please email me directly at gryphonATsierrapermacultureDOTorg

All the best for ’11,
Paul

Towards a Local Permaculture Center for Nevada County

In this video, Geoff Lawton of the Permaculture Research Institute, makes a case for the need to establish local permaculture centers across the globe in order to help local populations scale-up in response to Peak Oil and economic descent.

If you are interested in helping make this ambitious goal a reality at the local level — either through funding, grant writing, labor/sweat equity, pro-bono expertise, or siting — please email us via the Contact page. Most specifically, we are interested in land-owners who have a property with proper zoning where such a center can be established on a permanent basis.

Great new stuff

Hello and happy winter!

For a year-end treat, there are a couple of great new guild resources available that we want to let you know about.

First, is The Re-Source. Think of it as a “Freecycle” for permies. Got a surplus of something you want to share or are you in need of materials, labor/help or other resources? Post your “wanted” and “offer” ads to The Re-Source database. You must be a member of the Sierra Permaculture Guild listserv to use it, so if you’re not signed up already, here’s another great reason to do so now.

Second, we’ve created our very own YouTube channel which features the best free permaculture videos on the web. Visit the Sierra Permaculture channel today and start viewing vids featuring Bill Mollison, Geoff Lawton, The Bullock Brothers, Ken Fern, the Dervaes family, and other wonderful permaculture practitioners from around the globe! Check in often as we’ll continually be updating the selections.

Keep your eyes posted for upcoming info on 2011 Sierra Permaculture Guild meetings, workshops, trainings and other local events.

May 2011 bring you health and abundance!

September Sierra Permaculture Guild Meeting

EcoVillage & Low Impact Development Strategic Planning
Do you want to know how to be able to successfully build and create an EcoVillage?  Join us for in depth discussion about strategic planning that can be done here in the United States based upon the work and success of the Lammas EcoVillage in Wales.  Learn how Paul Wimbush and the Lammas family pioneered from the ground up the first global model of an ‘EcoVillage’ that made it through the strict and rigorous planning departments of Wales in the UK.  Learn why if Lammas could succeed in the UK then community planners can also succeed here in California using the Lammas process and model to get through the red tape and/or community resistance.  Presented by Dandarius of the Interdependent Project: http://www.interdependentproject.org

Always free and open to the public — donations gratefully accepted.

Anyone interested in permaculture, sustainable design, ecological agriculture, peak oil, relocalization and related topics is encouraged to attend and participate. Bring your questions, ideas, stories, and visions of how permaculture can help us bridge the transition as we co-create sustainable homesteads, communities and livelihoods.

Household Greywater Systems with Matt Berry

Laundry to Landscape greywater Have you heard about greywater systems, but aren’t sure if they could work for you? Come to Willow Springs to learn about the basics of household greywater systems.  Learn about Art Ludwig’s “Laundry to Landscape” approach, one of the simplest and most cost-effective greywater systems that diverts your washing machine water into the garden.  We’ll also cover the new California code that legalizes home scale greywater systems for laundry, bath, and sinks.

Always free and open to the public — donations gratefully accepted.

Anyone interested in permaculture, sustainable design, ecological agriculture, peak oil, relocalization and related topics is encouraged to attend and participate.
